The Istituto Zooprofilattico Sperimentale dell’Umbria e delle Marche (IZS-UM) is a public health institution, with the mission of providing cutting edge scientific and technological services in Animal Health, Veterinary Public Health and Environmental Protection.

IZS-UM is connected to international organizations such as WHO, OIE, FAO and UE. It works following the rules regarding the policy of service quality and applying UE Directives on inspection and evaluation of good laboratory practices. Customers of IZS-UM are national and international public and private sectors. Its main tasks are: research on etiology and pathogenesis of animal infectious and communicable diseases, diagnosis of animal diseases and zoonoses, microbiological and chemical laboratory tests on food of animal origin for human consumption and on animal foodstuff, epidemiological surveillance on animal health, animal production and food of animal origin, training of professional and technical operators in animal health, public health and animal production, technical and scientific co-operation with national and international veterinary research institutions, development of data processing and monitoring systems. In the IZS-UM is located the National Laboratory for Swine Fever. This is a well equipped laboratory for viral culture, cell culture, serology, PCR and animal house facilities (BSL-3). It is a centre for specialized activities such as Pestiviruses and Asfiviruses studies. The main fields of research are represented by CSF, BVD and ASF diagnosis, epidemiology and genetic typing.

The Istituto Zooprofilattico Sperimentale della Sardegna (IZSSA) is a Public HeaIth Institute with administrative and managerial autonomy, which operates as a technical and scientific arm of the Italian State and the Sardinia Region, performing analytical work for the public veterinary services and providing the technical and scientific collaboration necessary to enable them to carry out their functions in the field of veterinary public health.

This mission, which is governed within a path of accreditation services provided by a Certified Quality System (Accreditation) is also ensured through the implementation of a real network of Zooprophylactic Institutes that allows the carrying on of any diagnostic activity on the all national territory under the coordination of the Ministry of Health and with the help of the National Reference Centers.

Specific competences are recognized by the Ministry of Health, which has designated the IZSSA a National Reference Centre for the following positions:

  • National Reference Centre for Cystic Echinococcosis (CeNRE);
  • National Reference Centre for Ovine and Caprine Mastitis (CReNMOC);
  • National Reference  for Biological Livestock Husbandry (CRNPB).

The IZSSA has been engaged in the fight against African swine fever in Sardinia since 1978 and participates in the ASFORCE project as “Third Party” in connection with the CEREP of the IZSUM of Perugia. The laboratories involved in the project are the Center for Epidemiological Surveillance (CdSE),the Laboratory of Exotic Diseases (LED) and the Observatory of Wildlife Pathology (OWP).
