The Friedrich-Loeffler-Institut, Federal Research Institute for Animal Health (FLI) is an independent higher federal authority within the portfolio of the German Federal Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Consumer Protection (BMELV). Major aspects of the work of the FLI are the health of farm animals and the protection of humans from zoonoses, i.e. from diseases which can be transmitted from animals to humans.

Research aims at the development of husbandry systems in compliance with animal welfare, the preservation of the genetic diversity of farm animals, the effective use of animal feed for the production of high-quality food and other products of animal origin, as well as the protection from diseases by improved diagnostics, prevention and control of animal diseases and zoonoses.

The FLI consists of eleven institutes at six sites. At the headquarters Insel Riems, the Institutes of Molecular Biology, of Infectology, of Diagnostic Virology, of Infectology and of Novel and Emerging Infectious Diseases and of Immunology are located. The Institute of Animal Nutrition is located in Braunschweig, the Institute of Animal Welfare and Animal Husbandry in Celle. Jena is the domicile of the Institutes of Bacterial Infections and Zoonoses and of Molecular Pathogenesis. At the Mariensee site, the Institute of Farm Animal Genetics is located, in Wusterhausen the Institute of Epidemiology. As part of the central services, the Department of Experimental Animal Husbandry and Biorisk Management is also located at the headquarters Insel Riems.
